A Simple Letter (which might not be published)

For a return from my blog-hiatus, I figured this post would be as good as any. It's a letter to the editor of the Kitsap Sun I put together a few minutes ago. We'll have to wait and see if it ever makes it past the Editor's desk (or my blog).

Dear Editor,

I was quite pleased to see coverage of the local abortion protest “40 Days For Life” in the March 4th edition of your newspaper. I must say I found it rather amusing that, “Mendy Droke, a Planned Parenthood field organizer for Kitsap County, said the organization [Planned Parenthood] does more to prevent unwanted pregnancies than anti-abortion groups.”

Uh huh. Let’s try to stay on topic, Ms. Droke. The truth is Planned Parenthood is not in the business of “preventing unwanted pregnancies,” but in violently ending them. And these days, business is up. In 2004 Planned Parenthood received $265 million from the U.S. Government. The other two thirds of their earnings came from private donations and “clinic income” (that’s Newspeak for blood-money). Perhaps their new slogan could be, ‘Planned Parenthood: Bringing death to life.’

Ingeniously, those in favor of abortion have framed this whole debate in terms of “choice.” It’s time we look beyond the lame euphemism of “choice” and focus our attention on what is actually being chosen. As a former fetus, I oppose abortion. As a former fetus, perhaps you should too.

UPDATE: The letter was published on March 10. You can find it, with blogged commentary here.
